Load A Cash App Card – How To Add Money To Your Cash App Card

Cash App officially released its Cash Card in 2017. It has become well known due to its relative ease of use, fee-free overdraft, and its ability to be used anywhere in the United States that takes credit card payments. Any verified user with a Cash App account can apply for one of these cards and receive one in the mail free of charge. How do you load it so you can start using it, though?

Can you load a Cash App Card? You can load a Cash App by depositing cash at an ATM, transferring money from your bank account, or transferring monyey from your credit, debit card or pre-paid cards.

Can You Load A Cash App Card?

Below, I’m going to give you a detailed guide on how to add cash to your Cash App Card and which methods are easiest so you can start taking full advantage of your Cash App card, wherever you are.

Loading A Cash App Card

When most people think of Cash App, they think of the convenient green-looking application used by millions to send money to each other quickly. However, when Square Payments launched Cash App in 2013, the company had even bigger dreams.

They wanted to create a service that could fully compete with Google Pay and Apple Pay (their only competition at the time). This meant that they would need to provide their own card. So, they released the Cash Card in 2017 that allowed users to spend their Cash App account balance with a convenient, easy-to-use debit card.

You don’t exactly “load” your Cash Card the same way you would load standard pre-paid cards. Instead, you transfer money into your Cash App balance, which can then either be spent in-app or on your card, depending on what’s more convenient.

But, how do you add money to a Cash App card? You can add money to a Cash App card by linking a credit or debit card to the account, linking your bank account to Cash App, or by receiving Cash App payments from other users.

Let’s take a look!

Add Cash To Your Cash App Card At Any ATM

One of the easiest ways to load your Cash App card is just to use an ATM. You can go to any ATM in the U.S. and add cash to your Cash App balance even if you don’t have a bank account!

All you need to do is insert your card into the ATM, enter your PIN, and then feed it a stack of bills. Within minutes, the money will be available in your Cash App balance, and you’ll be able to spend it on your card. Since we’re on the topic, you can also withdraw cash from your balance at the same ATM! Whether you’re depositing or withdrawing, Cash App charges a flat-rate of $2 per ATM transaction, making it a good bit cheaper than most debit card ATM fees.

Link Your Credit or Debit Card To Cash App

One of the easiest ways to add money to your Cash App balance is to link another credit card. Cash App allows its users to add credit cards from the following issuers:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • Discover
  • American Express

That means they accept most credit cards. If you have an out-of-country credit card or one that’s been issued by a smaller, more obscure provider, then you’ll need to use one of the other methods listed below to add money to your account balance.

Adding a credit card is easy! Here’s how:

  • Open your Cash App application.
  • Click the ‘Banking’ icon on the far left at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a house).
  • Scroll down to the bottom and select ‘Linked Accounts.’
  • Press the ‘+’ button to link your credit card.

Once added, you’ll be able to transfer money from your credit card’s available balance. It will show up on your credit card statement as a ‘Transfer To Cash App.’ One of the best reasons to use your credit card (instead of a debit card) is that the money you transfer to your Cash App balance may be able to be applied to your credit card cash-back rewards, hotel points, etc.

If you prefer to keep things simple, then you can just link your debit card to your Cash App account. Follow the same steps listed above for adding a credit card. Cash App allows you to add any debit card issued Visa, American Express, Discover, or Mastercard.

Since most large banks and pre-paid cards use these processing networks, you shouldn’t have any issues. If you’ve obtained a pre-paid debit card, you’ll also be able to transfer your balance from these cards to your Cash App balance.

Can I Link My Unemployment Debit Card To Cash App?

After COVID-19 hit, many of those who were left without jobs received government-issued debit cards. Their weekly unemployment checks were deposited directly onto these debit cards, classifying them as a form of pre-paid debit card. Since all of these cards operate on either the Visa or Mastercard network, you can link them to your Cash App account!

Loading your Cash App balance with your existing debit card is another easy way to put money on your account. All you need is an active debit card that works on the Visa, American Express, Mastercard, or Discover network (which is most cards). You can also use pre-paid debit cards purchased from the convenience store with cash.

The main benefit of using a card to transfer the balance into your Cash App account is that it’s free. While ATM deposits require you to pay a $2 fee, card transfers are 100% free if you’re loading your Cash App card. The only time you’ll ever have to pay is if you’re instant-transferring money from your Cash App balance onto another card, and even then, the fee is only 1%.

Link Your Bank Account To Cash App

Some people are a bit wary when it comes to adding their personal bank account information to their Cash App account. Although the concern is understandable, you need not be worried. While linking your bank account to your Cash App, all of the information is 100% encrypted using the third-party service Plaid. Two-factor authentication is required to verify your identity, and you’ll also need to know all of your bank account login details.

Adding your bank account is simple and is similar to adding a credit or a debit card:

  • Once you’ve opened Cash App, select the ‘Banking’ icon from the bottom-left-hand of the screen.
  • Select ‘Linked Accounts.’
  • Press the ‘+ Add New Bank Account’ tab.
  • You’ll be redirected to Plaid (the third-party secure network).
  • Look through the list and select which organization you bank with.
  • You’ll be asked to log in to your bank account using your digital account username and password.
  • Once entered correctly, you’ll receive a unique code via text message or phone call to your phone.
  • Enter the code on-screen or say the code aloud (if you opted for a phone call).
  • The page may take a minute or two to verify and securely enter your information.
  • Once finished, your bank account will appear under ‘Linked Accounts.’

After you’ve successfully linked your bank to your Cash App account, you’ll be able to instantly transfer funds from your checkings account to your Cash App available balance. The more money you add to your account balance, the more money you’ll be able to spend on your Cash Card!

Although this method takes the longest amount of time to set up, linking your checking account to your Cash App account is, by far, the most reliable way of loading money onto your Cash App card. To add your bank account information, go under the ‘Banking’ tab, select ‘Linked Accounts,’ and then ‘+ New Bank Account.’

You’ll be temporarily redirected to Plaid, which encrypts the session (making it secure), and asks you to select which bank you use and login to your online account. Once they verify that it’s you, you’ll be able to easily send money to and from your Cash App account and your personal checking account.

Add Money To Your Cash App Balance

The most straightforward way to “load” your Cash Card is simply to increase your balance by transferring money from one of your cards or bank accounts. Transferring money to your Cash App account is always free and can be done in a matter of seconds!

As soon as you transfer funds, they should be available to use. In some rare cases, if the network is undergoing a lot of traffic, it may take up to 10 minutes or so to see the funds available in your Cash App balance. However, this is quite rare. Usually, transfer speeds are incredibly fast.

Cash App allows its users to have one credit card, one debit card, and one bank account linked at a time. Should you wish to use another secondary card or account, then you’ll need to “replace” one of the other cards you have registered under the ‘Banking > Linked Accounts’ section of the app.

Get Other Cash App Users To Send You Money on Cash App

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to go through all of the trouble of punching in card numbers and going to the ATM, then there’s an even easier method. All you need to do is find another Cash App user. Simply give them the cash and then ask them to send the money directly to your account.

This method doesn’t require you to spend any money on fees, and the money will be available for you to spend instantly. Just make sure that you trust the other person to not run off with your money and to actually send it to your account.

Receive Payments Via Cash App

Linking your personal cards or bank account to Cash App is the easiest way to quickly add money to your Cash App account and card balance. However, another way to add money to your Cash Card is simply to have other Cash App users send money to you through the app. All they need is your “Cashtag” (your username with the ‘$’ symbol before it) or your unique QR code.

Here’s how to view your Cashtag or QR code:

  • Open Cash App.
  • Select the ‘$’ icon from the bottom-center of the screen to bring up the main green screen.
  • Select your profile picture/image in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen.
  • Underneath your name, you’ll see your Cashtag, which the other user can use to send money to you.
  • If you prefer for the other user to scan your QR code using their camera, then keep the same ‘Profile’ screen open.
  • In the upper-right-hand corner of the ‘Profile’ area, you’ll see a small box-shaped barcode.
  • Press this to bring up your unique QR code.
  • The other user can scan this code from their Cash App scanner to send money to your Cash App balance.

Once the other user has sent the money to your account, it may take up to five minutes to appear. As soon as the funds are available in your account balance, you’ll be able to spend the money on your Cash Card or withdraw it from an ATM using your Cash Card.

How To Add Money To A Cash App Card

For all intents and purposes, your Cash App card will function just like an everyday credit or debit card. Your Cash App account balance determines your spending limit. That means if you have $40 in your account, you can spend $40 on your card, and if you have $1,000 on your account, you can spend $1,000 on your card.

Below, we’re going to show you the step-by-step process of increasing your Cash App account balance so that you can start putting your new Cash App card to use.

How To Add Money To Cash App Card Without A Bank Account

Although most Cash App users prefer to link their personal debit card, credit card, or checkings account to their Cash App profile, not everybody has one. Others simply enjoy their privacy and don’t want their funds being tracked by their banks and authorities.

By no means do you have to have a bank account to use a Cash Card. Since your Cash App card is based solely on your account balance, no additional information is necessary. The only requirement that Cash App has to receive a card is that you’re at least 18-years-old. They’re able to verify this by using your name, birthday, and the last four digits of your Social Security.

Method One: Pre-Paid Debit Cards

The easiest method to add money to your Cash Card without a bank account is to use a pre-paid debit card. You can typically purchase these from gas stations, grocery stores, and pretty much everywhere in between. They can be purchased with cash and typically cost a couple of bucks to activate them for the first time. You also do not need to provide any personal information.

Just make sure that your pre-paid card operates on the Visa, American Express, Mastercard, or Discover network (these are the only ones that Cash App accepts). Once you’ve loaded your pre-paid debit card and activated it, you can add it to your ‘Linked Accounts’ using the same methods we discussed above.

Method Two: Get Other Users To Send You Cash

If you don’t feel like going through the hassle of purchasing a pre-paid debit card (although it’s actually very simple), then you can get other users to send you money through Cash App. Unless you’re borrowing the money, just give them your money and ask them if they could send it to you through Cash App. This way, there’s no way to trace it back to your personal bank account.

It doesn’t matter which of the two methods you choose. Either way, the result is the same- you’ll get money added to your Cash App balance, which can then be spent freely using your Cash App card!

FAQ

Can My Cash Card Be Declined?

The only time your Cash App card will ever be declined is if you do not have the necessary funds available to make the purchase. For instance, if you have $50 in your Cash App account balance and try to spend $51 at the store, the transaction will decline until you add more money to your Cash App card.

Can You Overdraft Your Cash App Card?

Typically, your Cash Card will decline if you try to over-spend more money than you have available in your Cash App balance. However, sometimes “secondary fees” can cause your account to overdraft. These secondary fees usually tend to be automated withdrawals (bills and subscriptions) or added service charges (such as restaurant tips or added cleaning fees).

Does Cash App Charge An Overdraft Fee?

Overdrafting your Cash App card will cause your account to become negative. However, unlike most banks, Cash App does not charge any overdraft fees! In fact, this is one of the best reasons to use a Cash Card over a traditional debit card.

Most banks charge up to $35 for every single overdraft purchase or withdrawal that you make, which can quickly make your accidental -$2 overdraft turn into -$37. That’s pretty unfair, right? Thankfully Cash App shares the same opinion.

In fact, lately, Cash App has been experimenting with a feature that allows certain authorized users to overdraft up to $200 as long as they pay it back at the end of the week. This is similar to the way that certain online banks are now offering a ‘Spot Me’ feature. Users will typically be required to verify that they have a steady job/paycheck and can pay the money back.

Can I Use My Cash App Card At Any ATM?

Another great reason to use a Cash App card over a traditional debit card is that you can withdraw cash money from your available Cash App balance from any ATM in the United States!

This is an excellent way to quickly convert your Cash App balance to real cash without the hassle of having to transfer it to your bank account, paying the 1% instant-transfer fee, and then going out of your way to find an ATM for your debit card.

In addition to withdrawing money from your Cash App balance, you can also deposit money the same exact way. If you’re looking for how to add money to your Cash App card in-store, I wrote an excellent how-to guide here

Some users do this to avoid their bank tracking their money. This can be useful if you have a tax lien on your bank account that automatically withdraws money from your account or if you have child support withdrawals that would otherwise take the money as soon as you deposited it into your bank account. You didn’t hear that from me, though!

Does Cash App Charge An ATM Service Fee?

You might be thinking to yourself, “I can already do that with my normal debit card, though.” However, most normal debit cards charge additional ATM fees of up to $5 if you want to withdraw money from a random ATM (e.g., using your Suntrust card at a Chase ATM).

On the other hand, Cash App only charges a minimal $2 fee to use ATMs, which is significantly cheaper than most debit cards.

Is There A Fee To Use My Cash App Card?

Nope! You can use your Cash App card at Point-of-Sale (POS) system in the United States, completely fee-free. Unfortunately, Cash App cards are not supported out of the country yet, so your usage is limited to in-country purchases. This could change in the future, but for now, the rule still stands.

Can My Cash Card Payments Be Tracked?

If you have a Cash Card, then you can personally keep track of all your payments from your Cash App dashboard. Just open the app and select the clock-shaped icon in the bottom-right-hand corner of the screen. This will open up the ‘Activity’ tab, where you can view all of your Cash App card payments, deposits, and transfers.

If you’re worried about other authorities tracking your account, don’t worry- your account activity is private as long as you have a personal account. However, if you have a business account, then Cash App is legally required to send a record of your transaction history to the IRS at the end of the year.

Police officers or the court will also be unable to track your Cash App card activity. The only way they can see your personal information and payments is if they obtain a subpoena requiring Cash App to relinquish your information. However, they would first need to have considerable evidence of potential crimes committed before doing this.

Can I Add Money To My Cash App Card With My Unemployment Debit Card?

If you’ve been issued an unemployment debit card (EDD), then you can absolutely use it to load your Cash App card! Since all unemployment debit cards use Visa or Mastercard, they’re compatible with Cash App’s requirements.

Can You Send Money From Venmo To Cash App?

Cash App’s top competitor, Venmo, was created in 2009, four years before Cash App. That being said, a lot of people are still using Venmo as well. Although it would certainly be nice to quickly transfer your Venmo balance to your Cash App account and Cash Card, unfortunately, you cannot. This is most likely because they’re strong competitors.

Can I Add Cash To My Cash App Card In A Store?

Although there’s no specific store that allows you to instantly add money to your Cash Card, many convenience stores have in-store ATMs that you can use to load money onto your Cash Card quickly.
